JEE Main 6th April 2023 (Shift 1 & 2) Question Paper Analysis

The JEE Main 2023 Session 2 exams have started today - 6th April 2023. The first shift was conducted from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm, followed by the second shift from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm. Aspirants who are pursuing BE/BTech appeared for JEE Main Paper 1.

Question papers for both shifts consisted of 90 questions each. Correct answers will be awarded 4 marks, while incorrect answers will have a 1-mark deduction due to negative marking. No marks will be deducted for unanswered questions. 

The official JEE Main 2023 Session 2 Answer Key will be released after the exam ends.

1st Shift, 6th April 2023: Major Highlights

JEE candidates who appeared for the 6th of April Shift 1 exam summarised the question paper as follows:

  • Overall, the paper was easy to moderately.
  • It was easy compared to Session 1.
  • Math was lengthy and difficult.
  • Physics was the easiest of all subjects.

Difficulty level




Key points

The paper was lengthy, especially the NAT section.

A few questions from the MCQ section were tricky and lengthy.

Challenging questions from Integration, probability, and more.

The paper focused on the following topics:

The paper was tougher than the January Session 1 paper.

The paper had a mix of difficult and simple questions.

Questions from the class 11 and 12 syllabi were evenly distributed.

Several NCERT-based questions were given.

More focus on Physical Chemistry, which mostly consisted of integer-based numerical questions.

Organic Chemistry was given a higher weightage than Inorganic chemistry.

The MCQs section was easy.

These topics enjoyed more weightage:

The paper was tougher than Session 1. Said to be of NEET level.

Mostly formula-based questions, which were easy.

The following topics were given more weightage:

Overall: Maths was lengthy. Chemistry was moderately difficult, and Physics was mostly formula-based. All three subjects covered a significant syllabus of class XI and XII.

2nd shift, 6th April 2023: Major Highlights

  • Overall, the paper was moderately difficult and easier compared to January's exams.
  • Maths and Physics were tougher than shift 1.
  • Maths was the most difficult to attempt out of the three subjects.
  • A majority of questions in Chemistry were from NCERT.
  • All three subjects had an equal weightage of questions from JEE Main specific topics.

Difficulty level




Key points

The paper was lengthy, and a few questions were tricky.

High weightage was given to Vectors and 3D.

The following topics were also given weightage:

A few direct, theory-based questions from NCERT. Several concept-based questions.

Slightly more weightage was given to Inorganic Chemistry and Organic Chemistry compared to Physical Chemistry.

Overall, the paper had questions from most topics rather than giving weightage to a few.

These topics were in focus:

The paper was NCERT based.

Several formula-based and a few concept-based questions were asked.

Several questions were from the class XI syllabus, and many were directly formula based.

Weightage was given to Electromagnetism and Mechanics.

The following topics had more weightage:

Overall: The paper was moderately difficult. Maths was lengthy and tricky. Chemistry mostly had direct questions from NCERT, while Physics was simple, just like the morning shift paper.
