why is the electric field inside a conductor zero?

At equilibrium, the net charge lies on the surface of the conductor. Any net electric field inside the conductor would exert the force on the charges (i.e electrons) and will cause the charges to move means conductor to move. At equilibrium , the net force experiences is zero so electric field inside a conductor is zero.
