in 1st fig, the charges can flow omnly in one path....so electrons from the left plate of c1 will flow towards + end of cell. so + q charge will bre therer in left plate of c1. same positive charge will be induced in opposite plate as electrons from left plate of c2 comes to right plate of c1.so c2 also get q charge and so on.
where as in second fig, some amount of electrons (some from c1, some from c2..) gets atttracted towards positive terminal of cell as the paths are different . they accumulate at the junction and constitute current in the circuit as a whole .so the charge on c1, c2, c3 are diffecrent.
