Yes harmonic motion can be expressed as a function of both sine and cosine function. Harmonic motion is a periodic motion, both sine and cosine functions are simple periodic as well as bounded. Both these functions are harmonic functions and have a period of 2Π radians. Therfore harmonic motion can be expressed in terms of sine and cosine functions.
A simple harmonic motion can be expressed mathematically as:
y = a sin ωt or
y = a cos ωt
where y is the displacement of body from mean position at any instant t, a- the maximum displacement of the body, ω angular frequency (2π/T)
Both functions describe simple harmonic motion.They differ only by a shift along the horizontal axis (time) in the time dependence graph of the function.
