Retardation a in tree trunk is calculated using the equation of motion " v2 = u2 - ( 2 a S ) " , where v = 0 is final speed because bullet comes to rest after travelling a distance S=0.4 m and u = 16 m/s  is  initial speed .

Time t taken by trunk to stop the bullet is calculated from equation  " v = u - a t "

t = u/a = 16/320 s = 0.05 s = 50 ms
