Venturimeter is a device based on Bernoulli's theorem. It is used to measure the rate of flow of a liquid.
Venturimeter consists of a wide tube having a constriction in the middle. The liquid enters through the braod end AB called convergent cone. After passing through the narrow short horizontal part BC called throat, the liquid then leaves through the other broad end CD called divergent cone. Two vertical tubes are connected to the venturimeter, one to the convergent cone at point P and the other to the throat at the point Q.
When the liquid flows through the venturimeter, its velocity increases at the throat (constriction) and hence pressure energy (or pressure) decreases. This decrease in pressure is measured by measuring the difference in levels (h) of the liquid in the two vertical tubes.
The volume of liquid flowing per second i.e., rate of flow of the liquid is given by
where a1 and a2 are the area of cross-section of the venturimeter at points P and Q.
