Expert Answer
The following steps are to be followed to solve the query:
1) Use the capacitance formula C = ε0A/d to find the capacitance for plate separation d1 as well as d2.
2) Use the relation for potential energy U = (1/2)CV2. Note that this formula is used because a battery is connected across the plates, and so same voltage will be developed no matter what the separation is. Also after separation, we do not know the charge distributions.
3) Use the formula for work as negative of change in potential energy to find work done.
You should get
4) Substitute the expressions for C1 and C2 and solve to get the option (d) as the correct answer. Note that the effect of work is stored in the entire volume of the plates.
