CBSE Class 12 Board Exam 2020 - Physics Paper Analysis

The Science branch of CBSE Class 12 sat for their Physics CBSE Board Exam on 2nd March, 2020. Physics is considered to be a significant subject especially when higher education and even job applications are involved. Let us go through the Question Paper of CBSE Class 12 Physics for the year 2020.

Question Paper Pattern

Unlike 2019, this year’s exam was relatively moderate and had no shockers for the students. Let us have a look at the usual paper pattern and the pattern for the year 2020.

It is clear that the unit-wise marks distribution of previous papers and the marks distribution of this year’s question paper are almost a match. So all the students must have found it very comfortable to attempt all the questions in this exam from the paper pattern point of view.

This question paper is divided into 4 sections.

  • Section (A) had 20 questions of one mark each, this section mostly had Conceptual and memory-based questions.
  • Section (B) had 7 questions, but of 2 marks each. The questions in this section were of conceptual/numerical, problem-solving typology.
  • Section (C) The students found it the most difficult one. This section had 7 questions of 3 marks each and this section had a mix of all the types of questions i.e conceptual, numerical problem solving, derivational and diagram based.
  • Section (D) was the last section of this question paper that had 3 questions of 5 marks each. The type of questions asked in this section were conceptual and diagram based.

Key highlights

  • Considering all the questions, including the optional ones, this question paper had about 30% of the weightage for numerical and problem-solving based questions which made it a bit lengthy. This must have been a boon for students who practiced all the formulae and numerical questions. However, for students who were not that prepared for such questions, this must have been a pain point.
  • Most of the questions were based on the NCERT textbook.
  • The question paper was more conceptual than theoretical.
  • An average student would be able to score about 40 marks with ease
  • Any score between 45 to 60 out of the total 70 is a good expected score estimate
  • In conclusion, the CBSE Class 12 Physics paper was based on NCERT. Students who had practiced solving questions from the textbook wouldn’t find this paper tough. However, time management may have been an issue in this simple and lengthy Physics paper. We hope that students completed the paper by adopting a properly timed approach to answer the questions so that they easily score 90%.
