why is electrolysis impossible by a.c.?

It is impossible to separate cations and anions if we use AC supply, as both cations and anions will start getting deposited at both cathode and anode, making it impossible to separate them. For example in case of formation of hydrogen by electrolyisis, if AC is used, hydrogen and oxygen both aapear at both electrodes, thus making it impossible to separate them.
