phenomenon. Explain the reactions occurring during the corrosion of iron
in the atmosphere.

Dear Student,
Corrosion is a Redox Reaction:
Oxidation : Fe(s) → Fe2+ (aq) + 2e-
Reduction : O2(g) + 4H+ (aq) + 4e- → 2H2O(l)
Atmosphere oxidation:
2Fe2+(aq) + 2H2O(l) + ½ O2(g) ® Fe2O3(s) + 4H+(aq)
