Oxygen is essential for rusting. But a portion of iron rod in contact with oxygen is not damaged rather the other end is damaged. Explain why?

During the rusting of Iron, at anode the oxidation of iron takes place and it is not facilitated by the presence of oxygen it is essentially favored by the presence of water. The ferrous ion released by the oxidation of iron reacts with hydroxide ions at cathode; this reaction is favoured by the presence of oxygen. In the presence of oxygen, cathode reaction is faster where iron is not affected.
