Dear Student,

The electrode where reduction takes place is known as the cathode. At the cathode is the species that undergoes reduction (gains an electron).

The electrode where oxidation takes place is known as the anode. The species at the anode is the one that oxidizes or loses electrons.

Identify the Half Reactions.

Compare the two half-reactions' electrode potentials that make up the total redox reaction.

The reduction half-reaction (cathode) is the half-reaction with a higher standard electrode potential.

The oxidation half-reaction (anode) is the half-reaction with a less positive standard electrode potential.

Assign the anode and cathode.
