Cobalt(2+) is stable in aqeous solution but in the presence of complexing reagent it is strongly oxidizing. Why?

Expert Answer:

Co (III) has greater tendency to form coordination complexes than Co (II). Thus, in the presence of ligands, Co (II) changes to Co (III), that means easily oxidised.
