Expert Answer:
Because total work is W1 + W2, and W2 is actually -W2 becuase the pressure P2 is acting in opposite direction to P1.
In other words, the pressure P1 helps to push in the fluid, while P2 at other end opposes, hence net force
(P1A1 - P2A2).
