Let the velocity of man be v.

Now Velocity of bus wrt. man,vrel=-v

Acceleration of bus wrt man,arel=a

Now

When man catches the bus,displacement of bus wrt. man=-x=-vt+1/2 a t2

Hence :  1/2 at2-vt+x=0

The quadratic equation gives two solutions out of which the appropriate solution depends on the values.Even the  condiion that man catches the bus depends on whether the quadratic equation above is solveble or not.
