I assume the question is 'why prism causes dispersion of white light, but slab does not cause dispersion of white light ?"
- In a prism the refraction of light at the two plane surfaces which are not parallel and inclined to each other.
- The dispersion of white light occurs at the first surface of the prism where its constituent colours deviate through different angles.
- At the second surface, these split colours suffer only refraction and they get further separated.
- But in a rectangular glass block, the refraction of light takes place at the two parallel surfaces.
- At the first surface, although the white light splits into its constituent colours on refractions they split colours on suffering refraction at the second surface emerge out in the form of a parallel beam, which gives an impression of white light.
- Hence, the refraction of light is completely reversed due to the parallel surfaces of a glass slab which is not possible in a prism as the surfaces are not parallel to each other.
