why does chlorine water lose color on standing?

Answer:

Chlorine is soluble in water and the so the solution is called chlorine water. Chlorine water loses its yellow colour on standing in sunlight because of  the formation of a mixture of Hypochlorous Acid and Hydrochloric Acid.

Cl2 + H2O ? HOCl + HCl
