The alveolar air is rich in oxygen and hence oxygen diffuses from the alveoli into the blood capillaries surrounding the alveoli, which has low oxygen concentration. Oxygen combines with hemoglobin of blood and is carried to all the tissues of the body.

This oxygen diffuses from the blood capillaries into the tissues, which are deficient in oxygen.

The blood surrounding the alveoli have a much higher concentration of carbon dioxide whereas the alveolar air has low carbon dioxide concentration due to which carbon dioxide diffuses from the surrounding blood capillaries in to the alveoli.
