Expert Answer
- The meaning of freequency of an alternating current : The number of times this current changes its poles alternatively. Frequency actually means the number of oscillations or vibrations or any regular movement. In AC the poles (+ and -) keeps changing regularly.
- The value of frequency of AC in India is 50 Hz i.e the poles changes from + to - and from - to + alternatively 50 times per second.
- Alternating current considered to be advantageous over direct current for long range transmission of electric energy because it minimizes the losses while transmission.
- Transmitting power over large distances requires you to choose a higher voltage level.
- Since DC did not have the capability of stepping up (increase) / stepping down (decrease) voltages until very recent times, AC was preferred.
