Expert Answer
It is meaningless to say mechanical advantage of seesaw equals 1 . If that is the case seesaw game is played only persons of equal weight.
What is ideal principle behind seesaw is the ratio of mechanical advantage to velocity ratio is one , if friction losses are negligible
Let load W be on the left side of Fulcrum and effort on the right side of fulcrum.
Load W is a person with greater weight than the person with less weight making effort as E
Mechanical advantage = ( W / E ) ..................... (1)
Velocity ratio = ( lE / lW ) .................... (2)
where lE is length of effort arm and lW be the length of load arm
By taking moment of load weight and effort weight about fulcrum, we have , W × lW = E × lE ............... ( 3 )
from (3) , we get , ( W / E ) = ( lE / lW )
We see that in above equation, left side is Mechanical advantage and right side is velocity ratio.
Hence the ratio of Mechanical advantage to velocity ratio is one or efficiency is 100% for seesaw by neglecting friction losses
