Expert Answer
Fats are digested in the small intestine but they do not dissolve in the digestive juices of the intestinal tract. So, they are attached to the bile and bile breaks up the mixture of fat in the digestive tract into smaller emulsified particles, where lipase breaks it down. The broken down fat particles such as fatty acids and cholesterol are absorbed through the intestinal walls into the bloodstream, where they accumulate in the veins and are then carried to fat-deposit areas throughout the body to be stored and used for fuel when necessary. Fats are broken down in mitochondria through a process called beta-oxidation.
