ICSE Class 10 Answered

A uniform metre rule of mass 100g is balanced at the fulcrum at mark 40 cm by suspending an unknown mass 'm' at the mark 20 cm. What is the value of 'm' ? How can it be balanced by another mass 50g?

By taking moment about fulcrum, we have,   100×10 = m×20
hence we get m = 50 g

With additional mass (total mass = 100 g), if all the masses are susoended at one point,
then we have by taking moment about fulcrum,

100×10 = 100×d
hence d = 10 cm from fulcrum or  all the 100g mass is suspened at 30 cm mark in meter scale.
