A ball of mass 100g is dropped from a height of 10m It loses 10% of the energy every time it bounces.Maximum height attained after 3rd bounce is ?

Initial energy of the ball just before dropping is only potential energy,
 
hence initial energy just before dropping = ( m g h )
 
where m is mass of ball , g is acceleration due to gravity and h is height from where it is dropped .
 
when it reaches the ground first time , all the potential energy is converted to kinetic energy
Hence when the ball reaches ground first time, its energy is ( m g h )
 
After first bounce , since it looses 10% of energy , energy of ball = 0.9 ( m g h )
 
Hence the ball reaches the height ( 0.9 h ) after first bounce
 
when it reaches the ground second time , all the potential energy is converted to kinetic energy
Hence when the ball reaches ground second time, its energy is 0.9 ( m g h )
 
After second bounce , since it looses 10% of energy , energy of ball = (0.9 × 0.9 ) ( m g h )  = 0.81 ( m g h )

Hence the ball reaches the height ( 0.81 h ) after second bounce

when it reaches the ground third time , all the potential energy is converted to kinetic energy
Hence when the ball reaches ground third time, its energy is 0.81 ( m g h )
 
After third  bounce , since it looses 10% of energy , energy of ball = (0.9 × 0.81 ) ( m g h )  = 0.729 ( m g h )

Hence the ball reaches the height ( 0.729 h ) after third bounce.
 
If we substitute h = 10 m , then the ball reaches the height  7.29 m  after third bounce
