A small amount of water may not cause a lot of problem, but drinking large amounts of water during meals dilutes the digestive juices in the digestive tract, thereby reducing the efficiency of digestion. Saliva naturally moistens food and it also contains the enzyme amylase which is not present in water. Amylase begins starch digestion, hence we need to chew our food well and not eat quickly and gulp down with water. This will reduce the action of amylase. a
