It can be formed but requires high temperature. It is used as an explosive.
The Formation of NI3 form N2 and I2 requires 290 kJ of energy. The reaction can be represented as:
N2 (g) + 3I2(g) <--> 2NI3(s)
N2 (g) + 3I2(g) <--> 2NI3(s)
