why anaerobic respirattion is toxic to plants?

When plants respire anaerobically, they produce ethanol (alcohol) and carbon dioxide.
Glucose ----------> CO2 +Ethanol + energy
The build up of ethanol produced as a waste product is toxic to plants.
Also in anaerobic respiartion, less energy is released than in aerobic respiration from the same amount of sugar.
