What is refractive index?

Let a light ray travels from a transparent medium-1 to another transparent medium-2 .

Let c1 be the speed of light in medium-1 and c2 be the speed of light in medium-2

Refractive index n21 of medium-2 with respect to medium-1 is  ratio of speeds of light c2 / c1 .

Refractive index n21 = c2 / c1

If the light-ray makes angle of incidence i at the inteface of medium-1 and medium-2 ,

then if angle of refraction r is in medium-2  , then refractive index n21 of medium-2 with respect to medium-1 is

Refractive index n21 =  sin i / sin r
