The growth in plants is limited to certain regions. What is the reason?

Because of merismatic tissue present in some parts of plants as cell division generally occurs  in the apical regions of shoot and root. Thus, the meristematic cells present at shoot and root apices are responsible for growth in plants. They help in increasing the thickness of stem & root due to secondary growth.
