Vertical component of velocity uy is determined from the folowing equation of motion

v2 = uy2 - ( 2 g h )

where v = 0 is the velocity of ball at maximum height , g is acceleration due to gravity and h is maximum height

Hence we have , begin mathsize 14px style u subscript y space equals space square root of 2 space g space h end root space equals space square root of 2 cross times 9.8 cross times 39.2 end root space equals space 27.72 space m divided by s end style

Time taken to reach maximum height is determined from

v = uy - ( g t )   or   t  = uy / g  = ( 27.72 / 9.8 ) = 2.83 s

Horizontal distance S travelled by the ball is determined from

S = ux × t
where ux is the horizontal component of velocity

ux = S / t = 78.4 /2.83 = 27.72 m/s

Hence projection velocity of ball = u = begin mathsize 14px style square root of u subscript x superscript 2 space plus space u subscript y superscript 2 space end root space equals space square root of 2 space cross times 27.72 space equals space 39.20 space m divided by s end style
