A stone is dropped into a well in which the level of water is h below the top of the well. If v is velocity of sound, the time T after which the splash is heard is given by

Time duration t1 for the stone to travel from top of well to water surface is determined

from the equation of motion " h = u t + (1/2) g t2 " , where h is the distance between top of well and

water surface , u = 0 is initial velocity because the stone is dropped and g is acceleratio due to gravity .

Hence ,

Time duration t1 for the sound to travel from water surface to top of well is determined

time t2 = distance / speed = ( h / v )

Hence total time = t1 + t2 =
