Chordates are animals that possess a rod of flexible tissue called notochord. Chordates have a notochord and pharyngeal gill clefts at some point in their life. Chordates include the vertebrates, but they are not the same as vertebrates.
Nonchordates are the organisms that do not have a notochord. These do not have pharyngeal gill slits.
