Let one pipe alone takes t minutes to fill the tank. hence other one will takealone  (t+5) minutes to fill the tank.

Fraction of tank filled by both pipes together = begin mathsize 12px style 1 over t space plus space fraction numerator 1 over denominator t plus 5 end fraction space equals space fraction numerator 2 t plus 5 over denominator t open parentheses t plus 5 close parentheses end fraction end style
Time taken by both pipes to fill the full tank = begin mathsize 12px style fraction numerator t open parentheses t plus 5 close parentheses over denominator 2 t plus 5 end fraction space equals space 6 end style  .......................(1)
eqn.(1) is written as, t2 -7t -30 = 0   or  (t-10)(t+3) = 0  .  Hence acceptable solution for t :  t = 10

Hence one pipe alone can fill the tank in 10 minutes. Other one will alone fill the tank in 15 minutes.
