During day time plants carry out photosynthesis, during which oxygen is released. Some of the oxygen that is discharged during the photosynthesis process gets reabsorbed and used by the plant cells for respiration.
However during night, plants do not carry out photosynthesis and hence do not release oxygen, Hence they use oxygen from atmosphere for respiration at night.
