Places  A and B are 80km apart from each other on a highway. A car starts from A and other from B at the same time.if they move in same direction they meet in 8 hours & if they move towards each other they meet in 1hr. 20 minutes.Find the speed of the cars.

Let u be the speed of car starting at A. Let v be the speed of car starting at B.
when both cars travel in opposite direction, the relative speed of each car with respect to other is u+v.
 
if time taken to meet each other, when both cars travel in opposite direction is 1 hr 20 min  or 4/ 3 hour.
 
hence we write,  80/(u+v) = 4/3  or u+v = 60 ......................(1)
 
if both the car travel in same direction, they meet after 8 hours.
Distance travelled by car that has started from A , when this car meets the other one = 8u+80
Distance travelled by car that has started from B , when this car meets the other one = 8v
hence we write, 8u+80 = 8v   or v-u = 10 .................(2)
 
By solving (1) and (2), we get v = 35 km/hr and u = 25 km/hr
