The high concentration of protons can be used as an energy source to make ATP molecules. Protons are restricted from crossing the membrane and are only able to move back across the membrane in special channels. The movement of protons as they pass through the ATP synthase drives the conversion of ADP to ATP. This process is called chemiosmosis and makes the ATP that will be used in the Calvin Cycle to make carbohydrates.
