Q: If the numerator of a fraction is increased by 1, its value becomes 3/4. If its denominator is increased by 2, its value becomes 1/2. Find the fraction.
Solution:
Let the fraction be x/y.
According to the first condition,
(x+1)/y=3/4
4(x+1)=3y
4x-3y+4=0 ... (i)
According to the second condition,
x/(y+2)=1/2
2x=y+2
2x-y-2=0 ... (ii)
Multiplying (ii) by 2, we have
4x-2y-4=0 ... (iii)
Subtracting (i) from (iii), we have
y-8=0
y=8
Substituting in (1), we get
4x-3(8)+4=0
4x=20
x=5.
Hence, the required fraction is 5/8.
