Let us consider the dipole ( q L ) as shown in figure .
Let P be the point along the line of dipole and it is at a distance R from centre of dipole as shown in figure.
Let R > > L
Electric field at P due to charges of dipole is given as
if higher powers of (L/2) is considered as negligible , then , we have
Hence magnitude of intensity of electric field at P is proportional to ( 1/R3 )
