To solve this problem, let us take ground as the reference point and vertically upward direction as positive.

Here, x0 = h = 39.2 m

a = g = -10 m/s2

u = 9.8 m/s2  , t = ?

x = x0 + ut + at2 /2

0 = 39.2 + 9.8 t - 9.8 t2 /2

On solving the above quadratic eqn, we will get the time when the ball will hit the ground .
