Explain why paper strip with a spot of ink at its end is dipped into the solvent

Simple chromatography is carried out with paper.
The spot of the mixture is placed at the bottom of the paper and the paper is placed in the suitable solvent.
The solvent carries the mixture with it.
Different components of the mixture move with the different rates and this separates the mixture.
