Breathing is a physical process whereas respiration is a chemical process.
No energy is released in breathing, but energy is released in respiration
Respiration occurs at cellular level, but not breathing.
The steps in breathing : Inhaling of Oxygen & exhaling of CO2.
The steps in respiration : Inhalation, absorption, transportation and combustion of O2 and absorption of CO2, transportation to lungs and exhalation.
Respiration helps in utilising the digested food in the body to release useful energy. No such utilisation of digested food occurs in breathing.
Breathing is the physical act that animals perform to take in oxygen rich air and expulse oxygen deficient air. Respiration is the chemical process by which cells break down energy rich molecules (glucose) to get energy to perform cellular functions
