In plants, the vessels and tracheids of xylem of roots, stems and leaves are interconnected to form a continuous water conducting system, reaching all parts of the plant. At the rootgs, cells in contact with the soil actively take up the ions, creating a difference in the ion concentration between root and soil. Water moves into the rootfrom the soil. Hence there is a steady movement of water into root xylem creating a water column that is steadily pushed upwards. In addition to this, transpiration pull is another major factor in driving the movement of water in the xylem.
