Hello,
 
On a vernier caliper and many other instruments, there are two kind of scales attached for measurement. One is main scale, and other is vernier scale. 
While measurement, reading from main scale is known as main scale reading, 
and the reading on vernier scale is known as vernier scale reading.
 
Attaching vernier scale makes the least count of the vernier caliper smaller than the least count of the main scale which makes possible to measure more precisely.
