Forces acting on 4 kg block and 5 kg block are shown in figure . T is tension force acting along string.
If we apply Newton's second law to 4 kg block, we get
T = 4 a ............................... (1)
where a is acceleration of system.
If we apply Newton's second law to 5 kg block, we get
5g - T = 5 a ............................... (2)
By adding eqn.(1) and (2) , we get , 5g = 9a or a = (5/9) × 9.8 = 5.44 m/s2
