If v is velocity of shot , then recoil velocity V of gun is determined from momentum conservation
 
M × V = - m × v  ........................ (1)
 
where m is mass of shot and M is mass of gun.
 
Hence magnitude of recoil velocity V  = ( m / M ) v  ...................... (2)
 
Ratio of kinetic energy = [  (1/2) M V2 ] / [ (1/2 ) m v2 ]  .................(3)
 
By substituting V from eqn.(2) , we get ratio of kinetic energy from eqn.(3) as
 
Ratio of kinetic energy = m / M
