A sample of water gives an analysis 6.8 mg/L of CaSO4, 3.65mg/L of  Mg(HCO3)2. Calculate the total hardness and permanent hardness

Molar mass of CaCO3 = 100 g

Molar mass of CaSO4 = 136 g

Molar mass of Mg(HCO3)2 = 146 g 

Hardness if expressed in CaCO3 equivalents,

CaSO4 = 6.8 x 100 / 136 = 5 mg / L

Mg(HCO3)2 = 3.65 x 100 / 146 = 2.5 mg / L

Temporary hardness (due to carbonates and bicarbonates) = 2.5 mg/L of Mg(HCO3)2

Permanent hardness = 5 mg/L of CaSO4
