298.0 = 298 but bth have diff no.s of significant digits ???

298.0 means we do care to note down the decimal part, in measurement. It's just concidental that it's 0, it could have been 1,2 (298.1, 298.2).
But when we say 298 we just care for integral part. we don't know where it's a 298.0 or 298.6 rounded to 298.
 
Hence the significant digits are different, when the same numbers are reported differently as mentioned.
