Indian society has been dominated by the caste system since the ancient period. The people belonging to lower castes have been systematically suppressed in society. They had neither the right to education nor the right to equality. They also could not enter into temples or use public wells. Because they were denied education, it was difficult for them to enter into any prestigious educational institutions or find a job in the Indian Administrative Services. The Constituent Assembly thus recommended the reservation of seats in educational institutions and government offices for the people of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes.
