What kind of differences existed among the people of India at the eve of independence?

- The population of India in 1947 was quite large, i.e. almost 345 million.
- This lead to divisions in Indian society.
- Divisions existed between high castes and low castes, between the majority Hindu community and Indians who practised other faiths.
- Also, many citizens spoke many different languages, wore different kinds of dresses, ate different kinds of food and practised different professions.
