What is the difference between regeneration and fragmentation

Hi Tanisha,

Differences between fragmentation and regeneration:

  • Occurs in multicellular organisms with relatively simple body organization
  • Occurs in fully differentiated organisms
  • Organisms simply break up into many pieces on maturation and each fragment grows into a new individual
  • If the individual is somehow cut or broken up into many pieces, these pieces grow into separate individuals
  • No specialized cells are involved
  • Carried out by specialized cells, which proliferate and make a mass of cells from which different cells undergo changes to become various cell types and tissues
  • E.g. Spirogyra
  • E.g. Hydra, Planaria
