Leaves of 'CuiMui' plant begin to fold up and droop in response to stimulus. Name the stimulus and write the cause for such a rapid movement. Is there any growth involved in the movement?

  • Leaves of 'chhui-mui' or Mimosa pudica plant are sensitive to touch.
  • When the stimulus in the form of touch reaches the base of the leaf, the water in the vacuoles of the leaf cells loses water to the adjacent cell.
  • All the water escapes the leaf which then becomes flaccid. This causes the leaves to close.
  • This is due to the passing of impulse, which causes turgor pressure change.
  • Owing to this stimulus, the turgor of the lower half of the pulvinus is lost, and the leaf droops down.
  • Such a movement is called seismonasty, a type of nastic movement. Here, growth is not involved.
